Program Description

Social Science is the study of society and its relationship with economics, politics, and geography. It also includes other academic fields. As such, it is interdisciplinary in its approach and allows students a variety of studies that they can apply in their future careers.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Structure, analyze, evaluate, and support arguments both orally and in writing in the social sciences.
  • Interpret, compare, and contrast theories and practice in the social sciences.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the methods, concepts, and vocabularies of the social sciences.
  • Establish an understanding of historical and contemporary issues in the social sciences.

Here you will find the official PDF version of the Social Science degree plan. This will give you an idea of what courses will be taken. This is also used by students to record what classes they have taken, and to plan out the classes they will take in the future. Just prior to graduation, the student will fill out this degree plan, get appropriate signatures and submit it to the Registrar’s Office. It is also advised that they do a degree audit as they approach the semester they plan to graduate. It is best to print this out and bring it to your advisor for their review.

Admissions

Students may declare a major in Social Sciences upon enrollment to the university. Generally, students will choose their  major in the spring semester of their Sophomore year. You will want fill out a Declaration of Major form, available at the link below or through the First Year Experience Office.

This form allows you to declare a major at WNMU. Please print this out.  For the Social Science degree, please mark “Social Science” on page 2. Make sure that you check either B.A. or B.S. (for the major) and make sure that the forms are signed by the appropriate advisors. After that, submit it to the First Year Experience Office or to one of the Social Sciences Faculty.
